Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake Hits The Philippines

July 6th, 2008

An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 with its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean east of Cabanatuan City at 15.324oNorth, 122.434oEast on July 6, 2008 at 8:10 pm (Manila Time). The earthquake which was off-coast has been felt in several regions up to the south western part of Luzon, in the National Capital Region where the Philippines’ capital, Metro Manila is located. The earthquake was said to be felt in various regions:

  • 150 km (90 miles) North of San Pedro, Luzon, Philippines
  • 165 km (100 miles) East of Cabanatuan, Luzon, Philippines
  • 175 km (110 miles) East North-East of MANILA, Philippines
  • 205 km (125 miles) North North-West of Naga, Luzon, Philippines

45 minutes later, a Magnitude 5.1 on the Richter Scale was registered in nearly the same epicenter at 15.277oNorth, 122.475oEast, just about 5 kilometers away from the earlier 5.4 Philippine earthquake.

Although it was a coastal earthquake, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration gave no warning, watch or advisory yet in the Philippine region for the two consecutive earthquakes in the Philippine Island region.

The good news is so far there has been no damage reported in the region so far as announce on GMA News, ABS CBN News, Philippine Daily Inquirer and the Manila Bulletin. A few days back, a circulated spam email has mentioned a prophecy of a major July 18 earthquake that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Cheif Executive has announced to not believe the prophecy.

During office hour in makati on the hight building, i was experienced the earth quake also this morning, is that the effect from somthing? is there any eveidence of this shake?

  2. Seoph Says:

Hmmm parang malabo ata yun. Gabi yung earthquake hindi office hours. Baka yung experience mo mga maliit na gewang gewang ng building due to wind lalo na sa mga higher floors.

Evidence ng shake nung 5.4 and 5.1 earthquakes? Of course, kaya nga sya na report kasi it was detected by various seismographs. The seismograph reading alone is proof itself.

I think your experience is not just because of “maliit na gewang gewang ng building due to wind lalo na sa mga higher floors”; we also experienced the “earthquake” yesterday – we are just in the 7th floor of a 10-story building in a makati. several minutes after the quake, my friends from neighboring buildings asked me I felt the “earthquake”
